A few thoughts on the series premiere of The Chair Company — with spoilers — coming up just as soon as I have an inside wheelbarrow...

Review: Tim Robinson’s ‘The Chair Company’ on HBO
Can the star of ‘I Think You Should Leave’ make his style work in an ongoing series?

Before we get to specifics on this first episode, I realize I was remiss in one part of my review of the show, in not mentioning Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin's other ongoing TV show, Comedy Central's late, great Detroiters. In hindsight, I should have at least acknowledged it, if only to suggest that it was off the point I was trying to make. I adored Detroiters, but 1)It was for the most part a sketch comedy show disguised as a sitcom, and 2)The style of humor and characterization wasn't as aggressive and/or weird as it so often is on I Think You Should Leave. And since The Chair Company's vibe is much more in the ITYSL vein, that's the comparison that seemed more apt. Regardless, mistakes were made, grievances were aired, obsessions were born, etc. So let's get to the premiere talk!
