The Lowdown recap, Episode 4: 'Short on Cowboys'
In which Lee gets to know the widow Washberg

My review of this week's The Lowdown, "Short on Cowboys" — with spoilers — coming up just as soon as I name my favorite Michael Curtiz movie...

Lee Raybon spent the first few episodes of The Lowdown getting beat up, shoved around, threatened, and otherwise harassed by physically imposing men. This is par for the course for any hard-boiled detective hero, even if this one calls himself a truthstorian, and is really just a single dad in way over his head. Whether you're Philip Marlowe (either the Bogart or Gould versions) or The Dude(*), when you're in this kind of story, you're going to get smacked around a time or three.
(*) El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.
And while it might be entertaining for the creative team to find different ways to injure Lee each week, there are so many other noir tropes that The Lowdown can and should play around with. "Short on Cowboys" moves onto the next inevitable step for such a sleuth: falling into bed with a femme fatale.
